Amendment to the Companies Act 1985

Amendment to the Companies Act 1985

An amendment to the above legislation regarding the websites of companies came into effect on 1st January 2007. The effect of this change is that companies are required by law to display on their websites and in emails the same details as have been required on their business letters and other stationery. (Note that if you are trading as a partnership or sole proprietor none of this applies to you).

You also might like to refer to this page from the Companies House website - see the answer to 'What details are required on a company's letterhead?'.

Because these requirements apply to a company's 'business letters', and also apply 'whether the document is in hard copy or electronic or any other form', it would be prudent to include the details in all outgoing emails.

If you are a company with a website the following information needs to be clearly displayed somewhere on your site:

  • Company name
  • Company number
  • Place of registration (e.g. registered in England and Wales)
  • Registered office

e.g.
Widgets Limited is a company registered in England and Wales, Company regn. no. XXXXXXXX
Registered Office: 1 Widget Street, AnyTown, AnyShire, AA1 1AA.
